Bus Lines Safety and Monitoring in Singapore

Singapore has more than 300 bus lines, providing public travel service for millions of people every day. Techsoar worked with Panasonic, applied mmWave wireless backhaul system to buses, stops and monitoring centers, to realize real-time bus lines blind spot monitoring.

Challenge

With a narrow land area and high population density, the urban roads in Singapore bearing great traffic flow pressures. In order to improve public traffic trip efficiency, control more road information and optimize traffic network, a new reliable real-time data backhaul path is needed.

Solution

We installed two 60GHz mmWave antenna modules which were powered by solar power system at the bus stop, one aligns to vehicle travel direction and the other to the roof of building, and two cameras on the bus stop are connected to the 60GHz mmWave antenna module. A first camera pointing to a potential blind spot at the front of the bus stop and a second camera pointing towards the road preceding the bus stop;

A 60GHz mmWave module is installed in the testing vehicle, when the vehicle enters the signal coverage area of the 60GHz mmWave antenna module of the bus stop, the two devices will establish a connection automatically, and the HD monitoring video from the blind spot camera will be transmitted to the display screen of the test vehicle in real time;

The 60GHz mmWave module on the building connects with the 60GHz mmWave antenna module of the bus stop, so the HD monitoring video of the bus stop from the two cameras can be transmitted to the computer room in real time, which can be used for storage and AI analysis;

The testing vehicle is also equipped with drive recorder system which is connected to the 60GHz mmWave module and supports automatic upload of drive recorder data to the bus stop for storage and AI analysis.

Results

✔ When the testing vehicle approaches the stop, the mmWave module connects with each other, and transmits the HD video of platform to the display screen of the vehicle, the driver can have an overall understanding on road conditions in advance without worrying about blind spot. Data from vehicle drive recorder is also uploaded to the bus stop.

 The monitoring center can get the real time video data about roads, platforms and buses through mmWave backhaul system. Combined with AI system, the driving routes can be optimized to achieve efficient scheduling, and discover abnormal conditions of road or bus at the same time, which ensures driving safety.

Building mmWave wireless backhaul network is very suitable for mature bus system of Singapore to newly-built or upgrade vehicle-ground communication system because there’s no need to lay cables. The ultra-large bandwidth can carry massive data of vehicle-ground communication system, which is fast and stable. The system provides a large amount of accurate data for AI applications, that can realize driving routes optimization, vehicle scheduling, pavement maintenance reminder, and vehicle safety warning, which greatly improves the efficiency of the public transportation network.
